Scale of difficulty of via ferratas:
Eduard Hüsler (1944) created this classification in 2007. He thought that something was needed to indicate that this classification was about a via ferrata, to avoid confusion with other classifications such as mountaineering ones, so he added the letter K ( from Klettersteig, via ferrata in German), changing the letters to numbers.
It is the scale most used today:
-
- K1: Easy
- K2: Little difficult
- K3: Something difficult
- K4: Difficult
- K5: Very difficult
- K6: Extremely difficult
This graduation depends on 4 factors:
-
- Necessary force
- Endurance and physical fitness required
- Mountain and climbing experience
- Psychological issues and risk management
In general we can say that up to K3 level anyone who knows the proper progression techniques is physically able to do a ferrata. From K3 and especially from K4, a certain degree of physical condition is required to be able to overcome the difficulties that arise with guarantees of enjoying the atmosphere.
